Social media and the future of news

Blogging, Social Networking No Comments

The way we get the news is changing. Nowadays, social media has given you control over the news you consume to stay up-to-date. And here, your social media friends are becoming the most trusted sources of information.

In this sense, when you want to get the news… the first thing you do now is to check the stories your friends and people that you choose to follow via Facebook, Twitter, or other social networks.  You also comment or build communities for some specific topics or issues. Cool!

You certainly want people that give you fresh news on the topics you are interested in; and these people are probably your friends. In addition, you can also get news from people that you don’t know in social news sites such as ReddIt or Digg or even social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us (if you don’t care about time frame). As the stories, articles, and videos or pictures start getting popular when people vote them, you just read or watch what really is relevant.

Yes, then… you may check Google News or Yahoo! or maybe you would rather read RSS feeds or some online newspapers like the New York Times or the USA Today. Or, you still buy the newspapers or watch the news on TV. But, the truth is that you don’t act passively anymore.

The point we are trying to make here is that news are becoming more social… and customers out there are proactively getting news from people like them. They react and share news in real time as never before. If you get the attention of them, you have more possibilities to generate some buzz. So, what are you waiting for?

What are people saying about your industry? Your company? Your interests? You? Then, start to work to be noticeable with your own friends and followers. Don’t talk about all the time about you…. Share information that it’s valuable for your audience. That’s the way to start.
